What is No-Gi Jiu Jitsu?

Practical grappling without the traditional uniform.

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is a ground-based martial art that teaches you to control positions, escape when someone has an advantage, and apply submissions using leverage, timing, and technique.

Unlike traditional gi training, which allows you to grip the uniform, no-gi students train in athletic clothing and learn to control the body directly. The result is a faster, highly practical style of grappling closely connected to modern submission grappling and MMA.

Classes break unfamiliar positions into understandable steps, then give you a safe place to practice those skills with progressively greater resistance.

What happens in class?

Learn it. Practice it. Test it.

A typical class moves from clear instruction to realistic practice, giving you time to understand each skill before adding resistance.

01

Movement and Warm-Up

Prepare your body for training while building the movement patterns used throughout Jiu Jitsu. Warm-ups may include bridging, hip escapes, technical stand-ups, mobility work, and other movements that help you become more comfortable moving on the ground.

02

Technique Instruction

Your coach introduces the day’s position, explains the problem you’re trying to solve, and demonstrates the technique in clear, manageable steps. Rather than memorizing an isolated move, you’ll learn where it fits, why it works, and what details make it effective.

03

Partner Drilling

Practice the technique with a partner at a controlled pace so you can understand the movement and build reliable repetitions. Partners take turns helping one another learn, while coaches move around the room to answer questions, make adjustments, and offer individual feedback.

04

Positional Training and Live Rolling

Gradually test what you’ve learned against realistic resistance. Positional rounds begin from a specific situation with a clear objective, while live rolling gives more experienced students the freedom to connect positions, escapes, control, and submissions.

Beginners are introduced to resistance at an appropriate pace. The goal is to stay calm, recognize what’s happening, and learn, not to win rounds.

A culture of safety and control

Train hard without treating your partners like opponents.

Jiu Jitsu involves real resistance, so trust between training partners matters. At Fighting Fit, students are expected to move with control, respect the tap immediately, and adjust their pace to the person they’re training with. Reckless movement, uncontrolled intensity, and ego-driven rolling aren’t accepted.

Coaches introduce live training gradually, pair newer students thoughtfully, and help everyone understand how to challenge a partner without putting them at unnecessary risk.

That culture has helped us build a genuinely diverse room, with women and adults across a wide range of ages training alongside one another. That is not because the Jiu Jitsu is watered down. It is because everyone is expected to take care of their training partners.

The beginner path

Position before submission.

Before chasing finishes, you’ll learn to understand positions, protect yourself, escape trouble, and establish control. That foundation makes every submission safer and more effective.

01

Learn the Positions

Recognize where you are, who has the advantage, and what matters most.

02

Protect and Escape

Stay calm, keep yourself safe, and improve difficult positions.

03

Control and Advance

Hold strong positions and move toward better ones using leverage rather than unnecessary force.

04

Connect and Submit

Link positions, transitions, and submissions as your understanding grows.

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu FAQ

Questions before your first class?

Do I need any previous Jiu Jitsu experience?

Not at all. Most new members begin without any grappling experience. Your coaches will introduce the basic positions, movements, terminology, and safety habits step by step. You won’t be expected to understand what’s happening before you arrive. That’s what the class is for.

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

No. Jiu Jitsu will help you build conditioning, mobility, coordination, and strength as you train. You can work at an appropriate pace, take breaks when needed, and gradually become more comfortable with the physical demands. You don’t need to prepare yourself before beginning.

Am I too old to begin?

Probably not. Fighting Fit has students across a wide range of ages, including many who began martial arts later in life. Good Jiu Jitsu relies on timing, leverage, positioning, and efficient movement, not simply youth or athleticism. Your coaches can help you adjust the pace and choose appropriate training partners.

Will I get hurt?

Any physical activity carries some risk, but safety and control are strict expectations at Fighting Fit. Coaches introduce resistance gradually, pair students thoughtfully, and teach everyone to respect the tap immediately. You’ll also learn when to stop, how to move safely, and how to challenge a partner without treating the round like a competition.

Will I have to roll on my first day?

No. New students aren’t expected to jump directly into unrestricted live rolling. Your coach will guide you through the class and introduce resistance at an appropriate pace. When you do begin rolling, you’ll be paired thoughtfully and encouraged to focus on staying calm, recognizing positions, and learning instead of trying to win.

What does “no-gi” mean?

Traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is often practiced in a heavy uniform called a gi, which students can grip while controlling one another. No-gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced in athletic clothing such as a rashguard and shorts, and students learn to control the body directly rather than relying on the uniform. Fighting Fit’s Jiu Jitsu program is entirely no-gi.

What should I wear?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing without zippers, exposed metal, or loose pockets that fingers and toes could catch in. A fitted athletic shirt or rashguard with shorts or leggings works well. Jiu Jitsu is practiced barefoot on the mats, so no special uniform is required.

Do I need wrestling or MMA experience?

No. Wrestling and MMA share some skills with no-gi Jiu Jitsu, but neither is required. We teach the movement, positions, takedowns, control, escapes, and submissions within the program, starting with the fundamentals. Experience in another grappling art can help, but complete beginners are fully expected.

Which class should I try first?

You’re welcome to begin with any No-Gi Jiu Jitsu class on the schedule. Our coaches regularly work with first-time students and will help you follow along regardless of which class you attend. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday follow the same class format, with beginners welcome in each.

How does the free trial work?
